After a year long design dialogue with Hackney Local Planning Authority, we managed to secure planning consent for a 5-storey, highly detailed mixed used building at the prominent Westgate Triangle in Mare Street Conservation Area, right next to the listed St John The Baptist Church.

Guided by the site histories and its current context, our approach explores a suitable massing that seeks to mend the Mare street elevation with a high quality contemporary building that re-frames the view of the church in a more sensitive manner.

The proposed facade reinforces the established fenestration rhythm on Mare Street with a subtle textural articulation that mirrors the verticality of the church. The choice of façade materials and its articulation is derived by inspirations with cue taken from local relevant buildings.
